Web Archiving Programme
The Web Archiving Programme has been set up to:
- put in place systems that enable the British Library to become the point of first resort for anyone who wants to access a comprehensive archive of material from the UK Web domain
- ensure that this archive will be accessible forever
- put in place people, processes and systems to enable the Library to fulfill its obligations with respect to legal deposit.
Working with others
The British Library is a founder member of the UK Web Archiving Consortium and chairs the steering committee. The archive contains over 2100 different sites, over 1000 of which have been contributed by the team at the British Library.
The British Library is also a member of the International Internet Preservation Consortium and is working with other Consortium members to develop improved tools for selecting and archiving websites.
In September 2006 we collaborated with the National Library of New Zealand to develop the Web Curator Tool , a web-based software application for managing the selection and quality assurance of web sites for archiving.
In November 2006 we entered a partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), the Library of Congress and the Internet Archive to develop a Smart Web Archiving Crawler. The first fruits of this partnership were delivered in March 2007 in a new version of the Heritrix web crawler.
